Tucked into Meyers Place, just off Bourke Street, The Waiters Restaurant has been Melbourne’s hidden Italian gem for anyone who knows to look for it. Long before the lunch crowd finds their favourite laneway spot, ours have already found theirs — coming back for the classics done properly: rich ragùs, hand-carved veal, risotto stirred to order.

Booths fill with regulars and first-timers alike, and there’s always room for one more chair at the table. Groups of two or twelve, walk-ins or a phone call ahead — you’ll be looked after the old-fashioned way.
